Synopsis:
Although Genius writer Osamu Dazai has a pregnant wife, Michiko, and two children, there are continuous rumors of affairs and repeated suicide attempts. He has become a star of the time by repeatedly releasing best sellers even though he has gotten on the wrong side of the Establishment because of his eccentric way of life. Dazai falls in love with Shizuko, an aspiring writer, through her literary talent, and they love each other intensely. At the same time, he seeks salvation through Tomie, a widow. Dazai’s life goes crazy when his two mistresses wants a child, but he is spurred on by Michiko who still believes in her husband’s talent, and he finally starts writing the story of “A man disqualified as human" that can only be written by him alone...
天才作家太宰治（小栗旬 飾）自殺未遂，回到妻子美知子（宮澤理惠 飾）和兒女身邊過平凡的生活。一日，遇上以「戀愛和革命」為人生座右銘，志向成為作家的靜子（澤尻英龍華 飾）便不能自拔，隨即與她展開一段激烈的關係，靜子更為他誕下一女。太宰治又利用她的日記創作出《斜陽》，震撼日本文壇。
此時，以雙雙殉情為愛情終極目標的富榮（二階堂富美 飾），向太宰治投懷送抱，他再次深陷暴烈的情慾漩渦之中。同時，曾被數度拋棄的妻子美知子，終強忍悲痛離去，太宰治生無可戀，慢慢踏上自我毀滅的不歸路。身體開始崩壞，精神委靡不振，投河自盡前終下定決心寫出人性墮落的最終章 ──《人間失格》。
